California law banning drug coupons failed to increase generic use


A California’s law banning coupons for brand-name prescription drugs has not dramatically increased the use of cheaper generics in its first year, new analysis shows.

the law, which took effect in January 2018, was one of several attempts by state officials to control the rising cost of prescription drugs. Coupons have been an attractive target. Drugmakers claim they are cutting consumer spending, but critics say coupons are clever marketing tools used to promote more expensive drugs and ultimately cost the overall healthcare system more.
