Especially for you, the race against breast cancer is a huge success

The Breast Cancer Race Just for You has been a tradition at Cedar Rapids for more than three decades. His level of success in terms of both participants and money raised continues to be inspiring and incredible.

The 31st edition of the Breast Cancer Special for You Run took place on a wet Sunday morning at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, with participants in person and virtually. After the participation of 10,264 people at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in October 2020, a total of 12,806 people have registered for the 2021 event.

The Special for You Sunday morning event raised the colossal sum of $ 385,000 for the Special for You fund. It provides financial assistance for gynecological and breast cancer screenings for people in need. Since the fund was launched here in Linn County, more than 11,000 people have received assistance for approximately 26,000 services.

A total of 457 teams have registered for Sunday morning’s event. The 12,806 participants came from 37 states and 483 cities, with the oldest being 96 years old. A total of 690 cancer survivors have registered for this year’s race.

The Especially for You race, a combined effort of Mercy Medical Center and General Mills, is actually three events. There is a 5K run, a 5K walk and a fun one mile walk for families. After starting at Mercy Medical Center, the walk ended in Green Square with a health fair, food truck and more.

The annual event was first inspired by the wishes of Whittier, Sandy Knight, a resident of Iowa. She died of breast cancer at a young age in July 1991. Prior to her passing, she called for a race to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and education. This first year, 1,078 people took part.

Today’s race results will be available here.
