Experts find a spike in premature ovarian failure in women under 40; share causes, treatments

Experts have noticed an increase in the number of women in the 25-30 age group suffering from premature ovarian failure (POI) or premature ovarian failure (POF), “a common cause of infertility in women under 40,” they say. According to doctors, it is a condition when the ovaries stop functioning normally, leading to reduced fertility or even an irregular menstrual cycle.

What is that?

“Women with POI cannot produce estrogen and progesterone hormones or release eggs, which can lead to infertility. Some red flags are irregular or missed periods, inability to get pregnant, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, irritation, and night sweats. Seven to eight out of 40 patients each week experience premature ovarian failure,” shared Doctor Nisha PansareFertility Consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, Pune.

Genetic Disorders like fragile X syndrome, cancer treatments like chemotherapy or radiotherapy, viral infections and autoimmune diseases are the causes of this disease. Age, family history, and previous ovarian surgery are other risk factors for this condition. “We have seen around 3-4 cases and the age range would be around 25-30. Although we wouldn’t say the numbers have increased dramatically, but surely it is becoming a common problem among women,” said Dr Preethika Shetty, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Kharadi.

Diagnostic

History of the woman and certain blood hormone tests (follicle-stimulating hormone [FSH], estrogen, and anti-Mullerians (AMH levels) are taken into account in diagnosing this condition. “The chromosomal analysis and Fragile X syndrome mutation (FMR1) should be done to verify the genetic causes of this condition,” Dr. Shetty said.

Treatment

POI increases the risk of infertility in women. Low estrogen levels can also lead to depression, stress, heart problems and anxiety, Dr. Shetty added.

Dr. Pansare recommended consulting an expert if you have missed periods, a thyroid problem, a family history, or are undergoing cancer treatment. “hormone replacement therapy (HRT) compound of estrogen and progesterone is used to treat symptoms of menopause. Women who want to get pregnant and cannot conceive due to infertility can opt for donor eggs or IVF treatment. In the longer term, the loss of ovarian hormones, primarily estrogen, invites osteoporosis. So eat a balanced diet, take calcium and vitamin supplements and exercise daily to stay healthy,” she said.
