Help us save lives this 4th of July; “DUI doesn’t just mean alcohol” – Pasadena Now

When the celebrations associated with Independence Day — fireworks, backyard barbecues and pool parties — come to an end, it’s vital, police said, that all Pasadeans work together to spread this life-saving message: DUI doesn’t just mean alcohol.

Police emphasize that the safest parties mean not driving under the influence of not only alcohol, but also marijuana or drugs. This ensures that you won’t put yourself and others at risk by driving while impaired.

In recent years, California has seen a disturbing increase in drug-impaired driving accidents. During the four-day July 4, 2017, holiday in California, 17 people were killed and 430 injured in alcohol-related crashes.

Many people don’t realize that if you take prescription drugs, you could become debilitated enough to catch a DUI. Marijuana can also be impaired, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can lead to a DUI.

When you drive while impaired, you endanger the lives and safety of people riding with you and around you. You also risk a big hit on your wallet. A first impaired driving arrest could cost you up to $10,000 – which includes attorney fees, fines, sky-high insurance rates, car towing, a drug treatment program alcohol and drug education and lost time at work, not to mention jail time, years of probation, loss of your vehicle and driver’s license.

Officials suggest preparing for the fourth

If you drink, plan how you will get around without driving. Remember these tips for a safe night on the road:

  • Designate a sober driver or use public transportation or a ride-sharing service to get home safely.
  • Is a friend or family member who is about to drive buzzed or impaired? Take the keys and make arrangements to get them home safely.
  • Report drunk drivers – call 911.
  • You can also do your part by volunteering to be a Designated Sober Driver! Through our DDVIP program, select bars and restaurants offer non-alcoholic specialty drinks for sober drivers, among other offerings:

One last statistic to remember: Drink-driving deaths are 100% preventable.
