Adam Longshaw, 31, shares his weight loss journey with Men’s health.
My weight has increased steadily and steadily for years, from 82 kg (180 lbs) in 2014 to over 95 kg (209 lbs). I felt my health, my motivation and my fitness decline. I needed to do something and find someone to help me train. After careful consideration, I signed up for a 12 week transformation program at the Ultimate Performance gym in Manchester.
Part of my rationale for joining UP was that I had never had any training before, or any knowledge of how to train properly. So learn How? ‘Or’ What weight training was a huge learning curve for me.
My diet and nutrition have been completely overhauled so that I eat the right amount of calories my body can use and burn, along with the right macronutrients and in the right ratios. I also cut out the alcohol for the duration of the process. My trainer immediately gave me a four-meal-a-day diet that was mostly protein (chicken, turkey, and beef) and greens.
For the first 12 weeks I committed myself wholeheartedly to training and after discussing it with my trainer we agreed that three sessions per week would give me the best results. For the next 12 weeks, I reduced that to two sessions with UP, as well as two or three sessions on my own.
During my 24 weeks of training at UP, I lost a quarter of my original body weight, dropping from 96 kg (212 lbs) to 72 kg (158 lbs) from 24 kg (53 lbs). Also, I started at 29.5% body fat and reduced that b7 from 19.4% to 10.1%. I entered this process with high blood pressure: now my blood pressure is in the perfectly normal category. My family has been amazed by the transformation, and mentally I feel so much better in my own body.
After I’m done with UP, my new goal is to make it a permanent lifestyle choice: the way I eat, live, exercise, etc. Nothing is easy about this. But if you commit to yourself, your trainer, and your tailored program, after the first few weeks, when you see the results in the data, your weight loss, your body fat reduction, and your shrinking waistline, that fuels your motivation. Once I started to to see results, it made me even more determined.
A popular Chinese proverb says, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. There really is no reason not to do this for yourself.
