The Drug Enforcement Agency and La Vernia Police Department are encouraging county residents to hand in unused prescription drugs for proper disposal on National Prescription Medication Take Back Day on Saturday, October 23.

Area residents can hand in their prescription medications that day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of La Vernia Town Hall, 102 E. Chihuahua St. in downtown La Vernia.

National Prescription Drug Recovery Day events provide Americans with an opportunity to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.7 million people abused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million people abused prescription stimulants, and 5.9 million people abused prescription painkillers. abuse of prescription tranquilizers or sedatives in 2019.

The survey also showed that the majority of misused prescription drugs came from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.
