Wisconsin Attorney General Urges People To Safely Dispose Of Unwanted Drugs

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WEAU) – Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is calling on everyone to get rid of drugs they don’t need.

The Democrat called on people to participate in National Prescription Drug Recovery Day events in Wisconsin on Saturday.

Kaul took part in a virtual event on Wednesday promoting safe drug disposal with La Crosse Police Chief Steve Kudron and Coulee Recovery Center Prevention Specialist Rita Von Haden.

Local government agencies and health care providers in Wisconsin will host recovery events on Saturday. People will be able to drop off their unwanted and unused drugs, which will be safely disposed of.

“We have been a national leader in collecting these unused and unwanted drugs,” Kaul said. “We were number two in the country in terms of the total volume of drugs collected during the last prescription drug recovery, although there are many states larger than Wisconsin, and we want to remain a national leader.”

He added that it is important for people to continue to safely dispose of medications they are not planning to use so that others, including family members, do not take them.

“A lot of people who become addicted to opioids, and this includes heroin, first start their addiction by inappropriately using a prescription drug,” Kaul said.

He also said it was important that people didn’t throw pills in the trash or flush them down the toilet. Improper disposal can cause environmental problems.

In addition to National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, many agencies have permanent bins for drug disposal.
