Anyone who has ever seen You, the surprise that Netflix responded in early 2019 that the streaming giant has since taken over and has become a staple of its programming, type de knows what to expect every season. Our main character, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is a psychotic, utterly convincing and surprisingly reliable narrator through an increasingly absurd and strange world. We say surprisingly reliable because, of course, the character is crazy; he’s a stalker, a murderer, and he probably has the potential to be just about any other uh you can think of. But like his spiritual successor, Dexter of Dexter, what Joe says on the screen is what’s going on (as far as we can tell). He’s out of control, but he’s not living in another reality. And that makes it quite a unique viewing experience.
Part of what helps us shape Joe’s perspective on his world are the musical cues that You therefore fits perfectly throughout its course. With song choices that always match the right situation, we get a good taste of what Joe feels like. A melancholy moment? Here is the perfect song. An anxious or aggressive moment? The speed or tempo of a song can help us track how Joe is feeling and, therefore, what we’re supposed to feel.
Now, okay, Joe’s status as an antihero makes that a bit more nuanced than some more typical shows. Joe is our protagonist, but let’s be absolutely clear: he’s a bad guy. Again the guy is a stalker, a murderer, and just a horrible human being. But damn it, if his point of view doesn’t make good TV, does it?
After spending Season 1 prowling New York City, and Season 2 dodging people and trying to hide in Los Angeles, Season 3 brings Joe to a whole new world: the suburbs. Also in Californai, Joe now has a wife named Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) and a son named Henry. Of course, there’s a lot of drama on their beautifully wooded street – and as always, You To music to match accordingly.
